Sucre City Tour
The city of Sucre, located on the edge of the Anden region near Potosi was
founded in 1538 as a city of La Plata and soon became capital of the audiencia of Charcas. In 1992 UNESCO declared the city a Humanities Cultural Patrimony. The long isolation of the city has helped it to preserve its courtly charm: naerly all buildings in the centre are painted in their original colonial white.
Notable Highlights:
Sucre is the official capital of the Republic of Bolivia and the "Department" (state or province)of Chuquisaca. It is also considered
the cradle South American independence movements, which culminated in the independence of the continent, and Bolivia specifically in 1825, having been liberated by the noble Antonio José de Sucre, first president of the republic and affiliate of the Venezuelan hero Simón Bolivar, Libertador de América (Liberator of America).
The third university in America was founded in Sucre, and it was this university that indoctrinated the first South American revolutionaries, emerging from their studies with the words of the French revolutionaries on their lips: "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity." From this we can see what it truly meant to be a Colonial and Republican Sucrense.
With its churches, lavish colonial residences, wide,
cobblestone streets, and white fachades, Sucre has the flavor of history,
culture, and opulent living. Everything here recalls the golden days of the
past. A living museum of aristocratic, colonial Spanish society in the Audience of the Charcas, a dependent district in the Viceroy of Perú, Sucre was also part of the Viceroy of la Plata during the last years of colonial rule. Today Sucre remains conserves this same ambience and remains one of the best examples of the colonial epoch.
Situated in the middle of indigenous communities, however, it is also influenced by the "campesinos," or people of the countryside, whose colorful dress and traditional way of living only contributes the historic feel of the city.
